Injury to the area of the eye may result in complex lacerations or fractured bone with possible subsequent scarring, deformity and visual loss. Results are best if specialty care is provided soon after the injury; however, much can be done to correct the deformities resulting from old injuries
A mountain biking accident resulted in severe injury around the right eye, including orbital bone fracture, loss of skin, and lacerations of the upper and lower eyelids and the tear drainage system. The “before” photo was taken after the wounds were sutured in the ER. After skin graft and several reconstructive surgeries, he has 20/20 vision, normal eyelid function and a balanced appearance. He has a normal life and has resumed mountain biking.
